Survival after out of hospital cardiac arrest with prolonged period of resuscitation (250 minutes)

Christopher Butter, Karthik Somasundaram

Abstract

This paper outlines the case of prolonged resuscitation following an out of hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). It discusses the pre-hospital and hospital management, including outcome from percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and intensive care stay. The patient had a 10-day ICU stay, where he demonstrated rapid improvement before being stepped down to a hospital ward where he ultimately self discharged. The discussion looks at factors involved in favourable outcome as well as the role of PCI in cardiac arrest in patient with no obvious non-cardiac cause.
